Chevening is the UK government's flagship international scholarship programme — fully funding outstanding individuals from around the world to study a 1-year master's degree in the UK. India is one of the largest Chevening scholarship countries, with approximately 65–75 scholars selected each year.

What is the Chevening Scholarship?

Chevening is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations. It covers:

  • Full tuition fees (no cap — covers any eligible UK university and course)
  • Monthly living stipend of approximately £1,200–£1,400/month
  • Return economy flights from your home country to the UK
  • UK visa application fee waiver
  • ✅ Access to the Chevening network of 50,000+ alumni in 160 countries

Eligibility for Indian Applicants

To be eligible for Chevening from India:

  • You must be an Indian citizen (and currently residing in India)
  • You must hold a bachelor's degree equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours (2:1) or above
  • You must have at least 2 years of work experience (in any sector, by the time you start your scholarship)
  • You must apply to 3 different UK universities and receive at least 1 unconditional offer before scholarship confirmation
  • You must commit to returning to India for 2 years after completing your studies

Note: Chevening is not primarily an academic scholarship — it looks for leadership potential and influence. High academic scores alone are not sufficient for selection.

Application Timeline (2026–27 Cycle)

  • August: Applications open
  • November (first Tuesday): Application deadline
  • January–March: Written assessment and selection
  • April–May: Interviews for shortlisted candidates
  • June: Final scholarship notifications
  • September: Studies begin

The 4 Chevening Essay Questions

The heart of the Chevening application is four essay questions (500 words each):

  1. Leadership & Influence: Describe a situation where you influenced and led a change
  2. Networking: Describe how you have used networking to develop professionally
  3. Career Plan: Describe how this scholarship will contribute to your long-term career plan
  4. Study in the UK: Why have you chosen your specific universities and why do you want to study in the UK?

Each essay must be exactly 500 words — not more, not less. The writing quality, specificity of examples, and clarity of leadership narrative are what separate successful applicants from the rejected ones.

Tips from Past Chevening Scholars

  • Don't apply in your first year of work experience — wait until you have at least 4–5 years and concrete leadership examples to draw on
  • Be specific in every essay — vague assertions ("I am a leader") fail; concrete examples succeed ("I led a team of 12 to reduce project costs by 18%…")
  • Connect all essays to your 10-year career plan — the selection committee wants to see a coherent narrative from your past through to your future
  • Choose universities strategically — select 3 UK universities with programs genuinely relevant to your career goals, not just the most famous ones
  • The interview is decisive — once shortlisted, the interview at the British High Commission in Delhi is the final gate. Practice your essays aloud and prepare for follow-up questions
