The French government has announced updates to the Passeport Talent (Talent Passport) visa category that will benefit Indian graduates of French institutions from January 2026. The initial Talent Passport permit, previously issued for 2 years, will now be extended to 4 years for qualifying non-EU graduates who secure employment in France in their field of study.
What is the Passeport Talent
The Passeport Talent is a French residence permit for highly qualified professionals and graduates. For international graduates of French institutions, the most relevant category is:
- "Recherche d'Emploi ou Création d'Entreprise" (Job Search / Business Creation): Allows graduates of French master's programs or higher to stay in France for up to 12 months to look for a job or start a business after graduation.
- If employment is found in the relevant field, this can be converted to a Passeport Talent Salarié en Mission — the main long-term work residence permit.
Updated 2026 Rules
| Status | Previous Duration | New Duration (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Post-graduation job search permit | 12 months | 12 months (unchanged) |
| Talent Passport (employed in field) | 2 years (renewable) | 4 years (renewable) |
| Family members' permit | Same as main holder | Same as main holder |
The 4-year initial permit significantly reduces administrative burden — previously, graduates had to renew their permit every 2 years. The renewal remains possible for further 4-year periods, creating a stable long-term status.
Path to Permanent Residency in France
For Indian students who want to stay in France long-term:
- After 5 years of legal residence in France (combining study and work), you can apply for a Carte de Résident (Permanent Residence)
- The Talent Passport years count toward this 5-year requirement
- French permanent residency can eventually lead to French citizenship after 7 years of residence (with language and integration requirements)
This change makes France a significantly more attractive long-term career destination for Indian students — particularly in tech, finance, aerospace, and luxury industries. Read our complete France guide or speak to our France specialist.
