The United Kingdom's Home Office has confirmed a significant update to the Graduate Route visa: graduates of qualifying STEM degree programs will now be eligible for a 3-year Graduate Route visa, up from the current 2 years. The change takes effect from April 2026 and applies to students graduating from any UK university from that date forward.
What is Changing
Under the current Graduate Route rules, all eligible graduates receive a 2-year post-study work visa (3 years for PhD graduates). From April 2026:
- STEM bachelor's graduates: 3 years (up from 2)
- STEM master's graduates: 3 years (unchanged for this group)
- Non-STEM bachelor's/master's graduates: 2 years (unchanged)
- PhD graduates (all subjects): 3 years (unchanged)
The Graduate Route remains fully unsponsored — graduates can work in any job at any salary without needing an employer's support to apply.
Which STEM Degrees Qualify?
The Home Office uses the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system to define STEM. Qualifying areas include:
- Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI, Data Science, Cybersecurity
- Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, Aerospace Engineering
- Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
- Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Allied Health Sciences
- Environmental Science, Earth Sciences
Business, Law, Arts, Humanities, and Social Science graduates continue to receive the standard 2-year Graduate Route.
What This Means for Indian Students
This is a significant policy win for Indian students, who dominate STEM programs at UK universities. The extra year of post-study work authorisation:
- Provides more time to find an employer willing to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa
- Reduces pressure to secure sponsorship immediately after graduation
- Allows graduates to build UK work experience that strengthens future visa and PR applications
- Makes UK STEM programs significantly more competitive against Canadian and Australian options
Indian students planning to study STEM in the UK should check that their specific program qualifies under the updated rules. Our visa advisors can confirm eligibility.
